Here is what I am doing to save our country in November.

You can do it too!

As I am writing this, there are 130 days until the November 3rd election. Considering the importance of this election, that is not a lot of time. I plan to make good use of that time and I hope you do too.

Here is what I am doing to try and save our country by ensuring that Joe Biden, Democrats running for Congress, and Democrats on every ballot for every office in every state are elected.

This is not an all-inclusive list of ways you can help get out the vote in November and give Democrats wins, but these are the mechanisms I have chosen.

Republicans have abandoned our country. They have sold us out. They have aligned with hate and incompetence. November 3rd may be our only chance to avoid our democracy crumbling entirely.

Where I mention an organization, you can assume I suggest you donate to them if you have the financial means to do so. If an organization has opportunities for volunteers or actionable tasks that you can undertake, you can assume I recommend donating what time and talents you can to those efforts.

I encourage everyone in my sphere from family to friends to my social media followers to register to vote and commit to vote in November. We know that if there is a huge turnout in November, the Democrats will win.

There are many good organizations doing voter registration work, but I most often point people to the organization started by Michelle Obama, When We All Vote. It appears to me that When We All Vote is the most visible and active of the get out the vote organizations.

I strongly suggest that every registered voter request an absentee, vote-by-mail ballot, either at the time of registration if that is an option, or after they are already registered. Vote.org has an easy online system that allows you to request an absentee ballot. You can also send this link to people for voter registration as well.

If COVID-19 makes voting in person a risky challenge in November or if Republicans continue their efforts to suppress the vote, voting by mail is the best way to make sure your vote is counted.

Speaking of voter suppression, I support Stacey Abrams’ organization, Fair Fight. Fair Fight is working to encourage voter participation and to fight voter suppression across the country.

This is my personal priority daily action item. Every day I prepare five letters to be sent in late October to registered voters encouraging them to vote on November 3rd. I do this using the Vote Forward organization’s website. It is easy. It can be done from the comfort of your couch. It can be done while sheltered in place. I believe it is the most useful thing anyone can do to get out the vote from afar.

Swing Left is a grassroots organization that mobilizes donors and volunteers to help Democrats win the most important elections across the country. I especially like Swing Left’s focus on must-win races for Democrats up and down the ballot. You can support them all, including Joe Biden and Democrats running for the Senate and key state legislatures, all with a single donation (which is brilliant). 100% or your donation will go to the Democratic nominees to help them win.

Flippable is a political organization dedicated to flipping state governments from red to blue and providing effective ways for everyday people to get involved in state politics. They are part of Swing Left.

States can change the outcomes of presidential and congressional races. State governments write the rules of national elections. Republicans have used that power systematically to rig our voting maps (a practice called gerrymandering) and suppress Democrats’ votes. Flippable is working to change that pattern to make our elections fairer again.

I subscribe to the list of action steps sent by Indivisible to help elect progressive leaders. Indivisible is a grassroots movement of thousands of local Indivisible groups with a collective mission to elect progressive leaders, rebuild our democracy, and defeat the Trump agenda. It feels good to get their action items in my inbox and know that if I do one or more of them I am helping to elect Democrats and beat Trump and his Republican enablers.

Although admittedly more of a long view effort well beyond the November election, I support RepresentUS. Represent US brings together conservatives, progressives, and everyone in between to pass powerful anti-corruption laws that stop political bribery, end secret money, and fix our broken elections. It is only by fixing these problems that we have any hope of the American people feeling as if their voices are heard and acted on by our elected representatives.

So, that is what I am doing right now to help elect Joe Biden and all Democrats to office in November. Your active participation where possible is the most valuable thing you can do, especially registering to vote and promising to vote in November.

We can beat Trump. We can put Joe Biden in the White House. We can elect enough Democrats to the Senate to have a Democratic majority so that meaningful legislation for the American people can no longer be blocked. We can elect Democrats down the ballot for every office in every state.
