One of the few things I make sure to do every single day is go for a long walk. Sometimes I walk 2-3 times a day. Nothing refreshes my mind and improves my thinking better than walking. That is when ideas and my connecting of dots kicks into high gear and I return to my work more engaged. There is also research that backs up that walking improves thinking.
The only advice I'd add to walking, and I know it contradicts the article to some extent, is to keep a pen and small pad with you or an easy to access note taking app on your phone. It's surprising how often a great idea or thought leaves the brain within minutes of its emergence. Write it down. Often you just need to write down a word or few to remind yourself later. Maybe some can go back to work with everything that came up randomly in their head during a walk, but I need written assistance.
