Some Career Advice

Here is some career advice I’ve learned during my more than 50 years of working life.

Yesterday someone messaged me to thank me for some career advice I gave him a few years ago. He was recently laid off from his job and was able to find a new job relatively quickly. He credited some of my advice for the quick turnaround of his employment situation.

Admittedly, we’re currently experiencing extremely low unemployment in the United States. Getting a new job when needed might be easier now than at other times. Still, my ego wants to believe my advice did indeed help that person.

I’ve given lots of career advice over the years. Some of that advice was in response to a direct query from a friend or acquaintance. Some of it was entirely unsolicited and random.

Should you or anyone you know potentially benefit from the advice I give, here is some of it in brief. This advice is entirely from my perspective and experience. Other people’s experiences may vary and therefore so would their advice.

I’ve held many jobs from the most basic entry level position to senior management at a Fortune 100 technology company. I’ve worked as a salaried employee, and I’ve been self-employed. Regardless of your circumstance, I believe some of the insight I’ve accumulated over the years could be helpful. You can decide that for yourself…
