There Is Art In All Of Us

Everyone has the seeds of artistic creation in them if they ignore the naysayers. Creating art is a worthwhile endeavor for everyone because we all have art in us.

Back in 2012, I decided to download a drawing app to my mobile device to play around with it. The app I chose was Sketchbook. The app was originally developed and supported by Autodesk, but has since transitioned to Sketchbook, Inc.

There are many good drawing programs on the market these days. I don’t recall the process by which I chose Sketchbook, but it was probably the result of a quick online search and picking one that got good reviews. This recent “The 10 Best Drawing and Painting Apps for Digital Artists” article lists many of them.

Before I continue, a story.

When I was in third grade at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic grammar school, my grades were excellent. I was a good student. But something rattled me terribly that year. It might seem minor, but it had ramifications that lasted a lifetime.

I sailed through early grammar school with excellent grades, mostly As and a few Bs. But that third year we had a required art class added to the curriculum. I got my first assignment back from the teacher marked with a big red D across the top. I was devastated. The message that sent to me? “Race, you’re not artistic. Why are you bothering…
